Zincking out of the box: insights into a new antimicrobial response of macrophages

Jeudi 11 juin 2026, à 11h

Ronan Kapetanovic is a French scientist specializing in innate immunity, in particular macrophages, and host–pathogen interactions with a particular focus on Salmonella. His research aims at investigating new antimicrobial pathways found in the macrophages and at understanding if these pathways can be improved to enhance host defense and bacterial killing.

In 2004, he started his PhD in the Cytokine & Inflammation team at the Institut Pasteur (Paris, France) lead by Jean-Marc Cavaillon where he began his journey on the macrophage biology under the supervision of Minou Adib-Conquy. He then left for Scotland for a 4 years post-doc with David Hume at the Roslin Institute where he worked on the porcine macrophages, followed by a 7 year post-doc in Brisbane (Australia) in the group of Matt Sweet. There, he worked on several projects, all linked to antibacterial response : metal toxicification, immunometabolism, mitochondrial dynamic and immune lipid droplets in the context of Salmonella and uropathogenic E. coli infections. In 2020, he return to Europe with a Marie-Curie fellowship, and join the Friedrich Mischer Institute in Basel where he investigated the role of HDACs in the macrophage antibacterial response. Since 2023, Ronan is now DR2 at the INRAE ISP in Nouzilly (Tours) and is the deputy leader of the MiMoSa team (Microbiote, Monogastric, Salmonella) where his work is now focused on Salmonella and the a new host : the chicken!
